The teachers at Resurrection Catholic Grammar School in Rye, New York have quickly adapted to a new style of teaching to accommodate the new platform of “distance learning” brought on by the current COVID-19 pandemic.
As soon as Principal GinaMarie Fonte recognized that schools were going to close due to the spread of COVID-19, she and the Resurrection staff made a plan that would cover the short and long term task of this new way of teaching. “Even if this was going to be for the short term,” she explains, “I knew the students would need to have a schedule and be in attendance at school, each day, even it was from a distance.”
Principal Fonte and her team of teachers trained to use Google Classrooms, Zoom video conferencing and made a schedule to continue delivering their lesson plans for their students virtually every day from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm.
The students begin their day as though they would if they were in the school building, with morning prayers, greetings to their teachers, and to their classmates. Then they attend their classes where they cover assignments and homework. Quizzes and tests are submitted digitally, and each student gets feedback and connection they need to continue learning.
The students are even able to continue “attending” special classes like Art, Music, and Spanish. “Now that the weather is getting warmer, we are thinking about adding physical education classes in the afternoons for our students to get them outside,” Ms. Fonte says. Teachers impart more than just knowledge. Impactful teachers offer wisdom and help a child learn to navigate through the world.
Taking this role seriously, Resurrection teachers go above and beyond to engage and inspire their students in everyday life. “We know that teachers play a powerful role in a young person’s life," explains the Pastor of Resurrection, Monsignor Dwyer. “Aside from their parents, educators are the ones that are present with academics day in and day out.” Each teacher at Resurrection School has their own way of connecting with their pupils. Resurrection school knows how important it is to find ways to continue a great education despite these uncertain times.
Resurrection is currently offering virtual tours and invite any prospective students or interested parents to join in and obverse an online classroom learning session. Please contact Ms. Fonte, [email protected], for more information.
